Prospective Ph.D. Students
  • Research Assistant Openings

Since you are here, we assume that you are interested in looking for a position in our SM&RA research group. First of all, thanks for your interest.  and we are indeed looking for new team members with strong background and high motivation for learning.
Although you are free to send me your applications by email (yong9@ualberta.ca) without following the instructions below, note that the probability that we acknowledge reception is not high.
As such, you are highly encouraged to do the following as instructed below:

  1. Please send Dr. Li a short email with your interest and strengths.

  2. Please send Dr. Li your CV, undergraduate and graduate transcripts

  3. (Optional) You are encouraged to send Dr. Li some writing samples for your previous research experience, or a literature review on a specific topic you are planning to work on in our SM&RA research group.

You will be responded soon if you have a relatively high chance. But no response from Dr. Li does not mean you have zero chance.

Applicants with scholarships (e.g., CSC) are welcomed to contact Dr. Li.

Prospective M.Sc. Students
  • Research Assistant Openings

Unlike many M.Sc. programs in the United States, M.Sc. students can get financial supports in Canada. Please read the instructions above for prospective Ph.D. students. Students with the ultimate goal to pursue the Ph.D. degree (in UoA or outside UoA) after M.Sc. programs are preferred.

Prospective M.Eng. Students
  • M.Eng. Project

M.Eng. students currently studying in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UoA are welcomed to talk with Dr. Li for possible research projects. Dr. Li can provide research ideas to you or define research projects for you with respect to your own interest.

Prospective Undergraduate Interns
  • Dean's Research Award

The DRA provides a $500 award to undergraduate students who complete a research project under the supervision of an Engineering faculty member and is an excellent mechanism to engage our undergrads in research activities and (potentially) recruit future graduate students.  Students are expected to work on solving tangible research challenges and gain experience in an research setting for ~half day per week for one term, although projects can be Fall, Winter, or spread over both terms. Students will also be required to present their results in a poster-style presentation competion at the end of the semester.

To be eligible, students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA (letters to eligible students will go out shortly) and be in an academic term (Fall/Winter only).   Details on the program are described on the Faculty's website: https://www.ualberta.ca/engineering/research/undergraduate-student-research/deans-research-awards

Contact Dr. Li for possible projects.
